What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system.  This focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle strength, flexibility and posture.  It was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s and incorporates yoga, martial arts, dance and various bits of Western exercises.  It was initially adopted by professional dancers where Joseph Pilates taught in New York and has spread over the world.  It is used by celebrities such as Madonna, Jennifer Aniston and the Duchess of Cambridge.   So the answer to what is Pilates – Pilates is a whole body exercise system.

There are many health reports of Pilates although so far there has been limited research to substantiate this.  Longstanding teachers of Pilates state that it can improve:

  • Posture
  • Muscle tone
  • Flexibility
  • Core strength
  • Joint mobility
  • Relief from stress and tension
  • Balance

Pilates is suitable for many different people.  It can be totally modified to suit your needs.  Many people do Pilates because they’re not fit but it can also challenge the fit person.  It is a gentle low to no impact exercise programme.  However it is important to always discuss any injuries and special needs with your teacher so these can be taken into consideration during the class.

Please do not push yourself into pain. Work at your level and gradually increase as able with the support of the teacher.  This is so you don’t injure yourself, soft tissues need to gradually build up stamina, release and endurance.

Pilates: How to

There is much information on the internet and DVD’s about Pilates however in order to learn the basics about Pilates it is best to attend a class.  Preferably with only a small number of clients and also to check for previous feedback.

Acquire the basics as long as you keep this focus. Then there are beginners to advanced DVD’s, work at your level.  There are also many excellent video’s on Pilates Anytime, with international teachers, although there is a small charge for this.
